We have recently purchased the dining plan and I have a nine year old who I have a feeling will not want to order off the childs menu. If this occurs are there any other options such as paying extra to order off the regular menu or a childs buffet.

If you're on the Disney Dining Plan, a nine year old will be given child dining credits. This means that whenever a children's menu is available your son must use his credits on meals from that menu. But if he's a big eater, that certainly doesn't mean he'll have to go hungry.

At all buffet-style meals (Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fare, Crystal Palace, Hollywood & Vine, Cape May Cafe, Biergarten, etc.) your son can eat as much of whatever he wants from the buffet line. While there is a small buffet station stocked with food that are often appealing to children (chicken fingers, pizza, etc.), anyone can eat from any area of the buffet with no problem and no additional charge. My girls always eat from the "adult" areas at the buffets and I usually take a Mickey waffle or two from the kid's line. How could you see a Mickey waffle and not eat it? :-)

At counter service and traditional table service restaurants things are a bit more restrictive. Your son must choose from the children's menu here. But that doesn't mean you can't supplement his meal with additional purchases. You can always get more food by just paying for it. A great way to do this at a table service meal would be to buy your son a substantial appetizer to supplement his meal.
