I really want to take the kids to WDW in October 2011 or 2012, but I'm worried about taking them out of school now that they're getting older (14 & 11). Does anyone have tips to make it easier on the kids and teachers but still get to take our trip?

Hi, Taura!  We've been very fortunate to have a school that allows us to take our girls out to take trips, and we have never once taken that for granted.  My oldest daughter even took a 3 week break to tour the Mediterranean when she was 16 right before final exams without any flack from her teachers.

I give the teachers as much notice as possible.  Some teachers will prepare work ahead of time to take with you.  I also try to move my kids ahead a bit if I know they'll be missing school.  My youngest gets her assignments a week in advance, so if I know we're going away, we might do the whole week over the weekend before so she is ahead of the lesson plan.

The older they get, the less likely it is that the teacher will give you work in advance.  In high school, my older daughter had the same number of days she was out to make up work (so if she was out three days, she had to have the missed work done within three days of returning).  We usually break it down by subject, and do all the math problems one night, the English assignments the next, and everything else the last night.

Some teachers will even accept a trip report in lieu of some assignments.  There are a great many educational experiences at Walt Disney World, and you might find your teachers allow your kids to choose something from their trip and construct a report.

To minimize the amount of time missed, I try to do long weekends instead of a full week.  I can do a five day vacation and only miss three days of school if I go over a weekend.

    Have a great vacation!
