We purchased a meal plan for our trip, and now I wonder if we need to make reservations at restaurants. We have no real plan about what days we will be at which park. Our trip is July 15 - 22, 2008. Is it necessary to plan that much ahead of time?

    Eileen,

Call Disney Dining as soon as possible and make some reservations!  I cannot stress enough the importance of making reservation very far in advance.  Disney begins accepting ADRs at 180 days out.  Yes, that is six months in advance!  Planners like me take full advantage of that and call at exactly 180 days from arrival.

At this point I think you will have to plan your park days around what reservations are still available.  I hate to say it, but at 2.5 weeks away from arrival during a very busy season, there probably won't be a lot of options left to choose from.  I suggest making a list of places you'd like to try and having the cast member check them for you for the whole week of your stay - you may have better luck that way.  Definitely look at resort restaurants, as they may be less crowded.  Particularly ones off the beaten path, such as those at Old Key West, Caribbean Beach, or Saratoga Springs.

Table service meal credits are not exchangeable for counter service meals.  This means that, for your stay, you'll need to use 7 table service credits (for the basic plan, 21 if you have the deluxe).  If you can't secure reservations for all of your allotted credits you'll probably be better off canceling the dining plan and paying out of pocket for your meals, so that none of your credits (and cash!) go to waste.

You can reach Disney Dining at (407) WDW-DINE.

    Good luck!
