PLEASE tell me your opinion about the ride "Pirates of the Caribbean". I read on one website that is has a 14 foot drop yet books describe it as a watery dip. I don't want my 5 year old to not trust me on other rides if I mess this one up.

There is a drop, but it is not straight down. The slope is more like a slide at a park. If you think about a playground, there may be a slide that is 10-14 tall, but the slope of the slide is such that this is an enjoyable drop for children, not a frightening one.

Most books will tell you that Pirates is not at all frightening, but the reality is that you have to know what your own child's tolerances are. Pirates is not fast or twisty. It's tame enough that you don't even need a lap restraint in the ride vehicle. Two of my kids loved Pirates at age five. However, my third daughter is now nine and is still wary of it. My daughter's anxiety about Pirates comes from the darkness element of it. That just stresses her out. Other children who are not bothered by the dark are much more tolerant.

Some other ways to gauge the appropriateness of Pirates (or any theme park attraction) for your child is to experience the ride first yourself. Once you have the experience, you will be best able to assess whether they will enjoy it. If that doesn't seem workable (for example in a single parent situation or if you're in a big time crunch), you might want to think about watching some video of the attraction to help you decide. Many guests have filmed their rides on WDW attractions and posted the footage on YouTube or other similar sites. By viewing these videos, you'll get a virtual preview of what your child will experience.
