Could you please explain the Key to The World charging system for when we go shopping. At the hotel do these charges go on a predetermined credit card automatically? Or could I prepay the front desk an amount of cash to "load" my card like a lunch

You can use cash and regular credit cards at any merchandise vendor at WDW. However, some people prefer to add charging capabilities to their room key, also known as the Key to the World card. The main factor in using the Key card as opposed to a regular credit card is convenience. With the Key card, you only have to take one card with you to the parks and all your vacation charges show up on one bill.

To add charging capabilities to your Key to the World card, to need to set this up when you check into your room. You need to link the charges to a credit card that you give the front desk upon check-in. You can ask them to set a charge spending limit (which you can increase or decrease if necessary). You can also give charging privileges selectively to individual members of your party. For example, our family now allows our 11 year-old-daughter charging privileges on her key so that she can go to the snack bar at the pool and get a lemonade without us having to sign for her.
