If I am planning a trip for early July 2010, when should I book in order to get character dinner reservations but not book too far in advance in case promotions come out?

First things first: In order have the maximum chance of getting the meal reservations, you should always book your meals as close to the maximum 180 days in advance as possible. There is no need to have hotel reservations prior to making meal reservations.

As far as promotions go, this is difficult to predict. In 2009, new and unexpected promotions were popping up all the time. However, two weeks ago, Disney CEO Robert Iger made a statement at a conference that there would be fewer promotions at the theme parks and resorts in 2010. So honestly, your guess is as good as mine.

I can tell you that early July is one of the most popular times to visit Walt Disney World. The crowds are usually in full force around the July 4th holiday. There's always a possibility that the type of accommodations that interest you could be fully booked if you wait too long. Personally, I would feel most comfortable if my reservations were booked by late February for a July trip. However, that's my plan-ahead temperament and you may feel best waiting a bit longer.

    Good luck with your planning!
