Hey Howdy Hey, Kristine!
Welcome to planDisney. How exciting that you are planning your son's first Walt Disney World vacation. While I have been to
Walt Disney World probably more than 100 times in my life, every time I visit, it is a new experience. I am happy to help you maximize the magic for this special trip!
Kristine, summer in Orlando is quite hot and humid. I lived there for about three years, and my parents still live there. And, it is common for there to be showers or thunderstorms about once a day because of the humidity. The good news is that typically, these storms come and go in a short period of time during the day. Most often, they take place approximately once a day in the afternoon, so it is a good time for planning a sit-down meal or an
indoor activity, like a show, an indoor attraction, or even souvenir shopping. You can check the weather to get an idea of what time you can expect the showers to occur, and you can also ask the
"Hey Disney" device in your Disney Resort Hotel room for the day's weather.
If there is lightning in the area, some attractions, pools, or waterparks will temporarily close for the safety of Guests. But many indoor attractions are still operational.
My tip is to purchase or bring a Disney rain poncho in your day bag, because even rain can't dim the magic at Disney! We also typically plan to have waterproof shoes during this time. I also recommend checking the wait times once it rains. Sometimes it's the best time to get on a few popular indoor attractions that are still operating while other Guests take a break.
Our family has been to the parks a few times during the rain, and we have had just as much fun. If Cast Members deem it necessary, it is possible that parades, shows, or attractions can be paused, delayed, or canceled.
My tip is to remember that Disney is an experience, not just a destination. It is just as much about the Disney Resorts, thematic dining, shows, and Cast Member magic as it is about the actual attractions. Plan for the weather with sunscreen, water bottles, and rain ponchos. It is warm enough that even if you get a bit wet, you can dry off pretty quickly. But, remaining flexible and flowing with the magic is one of the best ways to enjoy Disney. You can always check with Guest Services when visiting the parks if you have any questions about the weather during your park day.
One more tip for you, Kristine! Since it will be your son's first visit to Walt Disney World, be sure to pick up an "I'm Celebrating" pin at Guest Services or at the Front Desk of your Resort. Cast Members love to congratulate and welcome Guests who are visiting for the first time and will sometimes even go above and beyond to add a little extra magic to your day.
I hope this helps you, Kristine! If you have any further Disney vacation planning questions, soar back here to see me and I'll be so happy to help you.
Magically Yours,
Keri
