We are planning to go to Disney in April 2012 with our 3.5 year old son. I was wondering how soon we should tell him about it, and how? Should we tell him once we are in the plane only? Put up a calendar and count the days?

Hi, Marcelo! I can only answer this based on my own experiences with my own two children.  I personally love building up the anticipation and excitement for the trip so I would tell him in advance.  However, telling kids more than a month in advance is torturous for you and them because the wait seems interminable.  At the one-month mark, we usually made a calendar or a paper chain together as a family craft experience.  Then, as each day passes, we mark off the day on the calendar or remove a paper loop from the chain.  Young kids have difficulty with the concept of time. So, when the question of how much longer until our trip came up, I would send them to the calendar to count how many days were not marked off or how many loops were left on the chain. My kids and 13 and 11 now, and oh, how I miss those days!  Happy planning and have a Magical vacation!
