Hi I am planning my first ever and long anticipated trip to WDW with my 13 year old son. He does not like heights or scary rides. What will he enjoy there?

    Hi Leanne,

No worries. I have a 12 year daughter who's exactly like your son and we've had dozens of wonderful Disney visits. There's plenty to do at Walt Disney World, even for guests who are averse to thrill rides. The first thing to do is to determine what exactly "scary rides" means to your son. Is it only drops and speed, or does it include darkness, or other elements such as loud noises or depictions of snakes or spiders. Once you know what the issues are, then you can can construct the best plan for your family.

For now, I'm going to assume that mostly what your son is concerned about is thrill rides like roller coasters or others that have high speeds or quick drops. These are:

    - Magic Kingdom: Goofy's Barnstormer, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean (VERY minor drop)
    - Epcot: Soarin' (not fast, but the ride vehicle does raise into the air), Test Track (no faster than being in a regular car), Maelstrom (VERY minor drop)
    - Disney's Hollywood Studios: Rock 'n Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror
    - Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest, Dinosaur

Other than that, everything else moves at a slow-ish speed. That leaves PLENTY to do.

If you son has additional concerns, please write back with the specifics and we'd be happy to give you lists of attractions which have those elements. And for additional information on this topic, you may want to head over to the independent website blog.touringplans.com and search there for an article called "Who's Afraid of Walt Disney World."

Good luck with your planning. I hope you and your son have a magical vacation.
