I plan to run my very first marathon January 2010 in WDW. Was wondering if Disney offers any discounts on packages, and is it more crowded the week before or the week after?

Hey Wendy and congrats on your training for the Marathon. I personally have never run but my brother runs it every year so I do have some information on crowds, as well as specials.
With regards to package deals, to my knowledge there have never been any specific package offers, but last year WDW offered the stay for four nights and get three nights free during this time.  There is absolutely no guarantee that they will offer that again in 2010, but it was an option in 2009.  It's important to remember that if you do make a reservation and an offer comes out that is valid during your stay, WDW will try to accommodate you and the offer.
As far as crowds, my brother and his family have been the week before and the week after and the crowds have always been minimal at best.  This past year they did not wait in line longer than 15 minutes for any attraction!  They were actually there 3 days before the race and two days after the race.  I believe a lot of the racers truly come in, run and depart.
I hope this helps and that your training continues to be successful!  Good Luck and thanks for the great question.
