Hello Beth,
How wonderful to hear that your son will be heading to
Savi's Workshop in the Black Spire Outpost to build his very own lightsaber with the guidance of the Gatherers. It's such a fun experience!
Previously, you have been able to send your custom lightsaber on its first mission home, but unfortunately, I have been told that is no longer an option. Perhaps those First Order spies were catching on to the operation! You will be pleased to know, however, that you are able to fly home with the lightsaber if that is your return mode of transportation. I have seen many Guests going through airport security with them at Orlando International Airport, so I am certain it's quite an everyday occurrence. Depending on your airline, I have heard people bring them as either their allotted carry-on or personal item.
In researching this further for you, Beth, I have also found that some people check their personal lightsabers with their luggage at the airport as well. It is recommended to separate the hilt from the blade and wrap separately using clothes or other items to protect them. Others have also packed the hilt in their suitcase and brought the blade as a carry-on to make it a bit lighter and smaller to bring with them on the plane. I also recommend speaking to a Cast Member if you are staying at a
Disney Resort Hotel to see if they may have any advice, or perhaps a shipping box left over to help you package it to carry home with you.
Before heading home, make sure to get photos of your son wielding his new lightsaber with the many
Star Wars photo opportunities available. Nighttime glowing lightsaber shots are incredible!
May the force be with you, Beth. I hope you have an incredible visit to
Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and enjoy your
Walt Disney World Resort vacation.
Bright Suns,
Lauren
