We plan on attending several character breakfasts while visiting WDW in December. Since these events will be buffets, and now that the Disney Dining Plan does not include gratuities, how much do you recommend leaving as a tip?

    Jessica,

Great question, and thanks for thinking about the cast members. They do so much to make all our trips magical, it is nice when a guest thinks about them too!

Having been a former waiter (and a particularly bad one at that), I would let you know that the wait staff at a buffet is working very hard for you, even if it is not bringing you a plated entree. They have several roles to fulfill, and they have to negotiate through one of the more challenging restaurant environments out there, what with the kids and the characters.

That being said, I think that the same rule applies as at a typical table service restaurant. Tipping 15% is the target. If your service was below what it should have been, let them know by both the tip, and talking to the manager. And if it was outstanding (as it usually is), I say go as high as 20%.

Since you are on the Disney Dining Plan, ask the host as you enter what the tab would have been. That will help you in knowing what range to consider.

    I hope that helps!

    Have a delicious vacation!
