In one of the questions under Planning and Budgeting--someone asks about Free Dining but does not explain what it is. Can you explain it --what do you get for Free? How many meals and how many people in the family can benefit from it?

Sure!  They are referring to the Disney Dining Plan which can be purchased when you reserve a Magic Your Way vacation.  (In plain English, this means when you book your on-property hotel room, park tickets, and meal plan all at one time.)  The dining plan is only open to guests staying on Disney property, and it must be purchased for the entire length of your reservation, for everyone in your travel party.

The standard dining plan includes one quick service meal (entree with side, beverage, dessert), one table service meal (entree with sides, beverage, dessert), and one snack (such as popcorn, bottled soda or mickey mouse ice cream bar) per person per day.  Beverages are non-alcoholic, and gratuity is not included.  You can choose from a long list of participating restaurants (almost all on property are participating - it is not restrictive) and make reservations for what interests your family.  Character meals are included!

For the past three years Disney has offered a special deal in August and September, where the dining plan is free.  This is usually announced in late spring, and there is a specific booking window to receive the free dining.  Just for reference, last year free dining was good on trips booked between 4/12/07 - 6/24/07, for travel between 8/26/07 - 9/22/07.  Again, that was only what happened last year.  Disney has not yet announced any free dining promotions for 2008 and there is no guarantee that history will repeat itself.  I'd hate to see anyone plan their yearly vacation around this only to be disappointed if the offer doesn't materialize.

Of course free is fabulous, but we always take advantage of the dining plan and I can say firsthand that it is still a great value for us, even if we do have to pay for it.  :)
