I've notice in the MK calendar it shows that the park hours are until 8pm some nights and also list the fireworks to start at 8pm. Do you get to stay just to watch fireworks or is this a mistake?

The park closing time really just means that new guests will no longer be allowed into the park and that the rides will begin closing for the night. The are often activities that continue in the park for quite some time. These many include guest dining, shopping, and special shows such as fireworks. You'll often find guests in the parks for quite some time after "closing."

If you're at the Magic Kingdom at 8:00, I would certainly plan to stay for the Wishes fireworks show. This is a wonderful event and the perfect way to end a Disney day. The only "mistake" you may find with staying for the fireworks, is that after the show, there will be a mass exodus from the park. With so many people leaving at once, the transportation at this time tends to get a bit crowded. My advice would be to hang out for a half hour or so after the show. Do some shopping in the Main Street Emporium or find a comfy bench for people watching. You'll find getting back to your hotel much easier if you wait a bit. And you may even get to have a little Kiss Goodnight.
