Hi there, Debra!
Welcome to planDisney! Being able to communicate with your family and friends aboard the
Disney Cruise Line is very helpful when your group splits up to enjoy a different activity (or take a nap!).
I do not usually purchase an onboard internet plan because I like disconnecting from the rest of the world. It is the perfect excuse to solely focus on family and fun! However, I often sent texts over iMessage on my iPhone using the
complimentary Wi-Fi, and I have family who could send messages using WhatsApp. It does seem dependent on the phone type, and photos and videos cannot be sent over the complimentary Wi-Fi.
My family also uses the chat feature on the
Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to send messages to each other on the ship. Everyone in your traveling party should be automatically listed in the chat feature after you board your Disney Cruise. To avoid missing any messages, enable "push notifications" in your phone's settings. I like using this chat feature because I will not be distracted by messages from people who are not traveling with me. I recommend downloading the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app now. This gives you time to get familiar with it, although many features will not be available until you are aboard your ship.
If you decide you need
internet access, you can see what options are available after boarding your ship. During a cruise last fall, I found out I was selected for planDisney! I could not resist buying a 24-hour internet package to message my friends and new planDisney classmates. The limited-time package allowed me to connect with my friends, and then I put my phone away to focus on my family. Also, I suggested checking with your cell phone provider before purchasing an internet package to avoid unexpected charges. Some providers require their customers to purchase a sailing internet package first.
Debra, I hope you have a wonderful cruise! If you have other questions, please reach out to planDisney!
Happy sailing!
Jen
