Hi Kristin!
Welcome home, and welcome to planDisney! As a
Disney Vacation Club Member myself, I’m here with planDisney to answer your trip planning questions with my expert tips and tricks! As a Member for more than a decade, I can share information about how Membership works, but as I am a nurse in real life, while I am really good at delivering babies, you should seek the expert advice of an estate planner or lawyer before you make any final decisions in this area.
Your mother can add you to the title of her Disney Vacation Club Membership. Because Membership is a real estate interest, adding you to the title is a legal process, just like adding you to the title of a home. There are costs involved, so make sure you anticipate and plan for that. If you move forward with adding you to the title, you would both be considered Members, and you would both be entitled to Member perks and discounts. Hers would not be taken away, but yours should be added.
There are a few ways to set up joint ownership of a Membership and this is one of the things you would want to discuss with a lawyer. You would want it set up so that should something happen to mom, the Membership automatically belongs to you. If you decide not to add you to the title, speak with your lawyer or estate planner about what to expect. Disney Vacation Club Membership is something that can be passed down, but there are different legal processes should you go that route.
Kristin, for more specific legal and estate planning questions, I recommend your mom
contact Member Services and speak with Member Administration. Member Administration is available Monday through Friday from 9 AM Eastern to 5 PM Eastern and can assist with specific questions about title changes, deeds, and other legal matters. You can also send a request by email to wdw.dvc.member.administration@disney.com.
Wishing you and mom many years of
Membership Magic!- Kate
