Hi, Carrie. Welcome to
planDisney. Your question speaks to me, as I have a family of 5 as well, and have traveled to
Walt Disney World with them around that age. It can be daunting, but the magical moments will outweigh the harder times, and you seem like a planner (you’re asking these questions seven months before you intend to arrive!). I believe in you!
I’ll give some general tips to guide you as you build the trip that’s best for your family. Pick a length of stay that’s good for everyone. If you think you can only handle a few days with everyone staying in good spirits, then worry less about doing everything in every park. That’s not a realistic expectation for kiddos of that age. It’s all about them having a good first trip - emphasis on first. Take the pressure off, and just do what you can.
Choose a resort with good transportation to the parks. I’d choose something on the
Skyliner, so that your travel to and from EPCOT and Hollywood Studios is at least quick and easy. The reason I feel this is important is that I’ve lugged the double stroller on and off the bus, and it’s not the best for stress levels. Also, and more importantly, quick trips back to the room for a midday break or nap can really be a game-changer for the little ones. If you want little Hercules to go the distance, plan for a midday break.
Schedule a few special dining experiences, but don’t overdo it. Character dining gives your little ones the chance to visit with their favorite characters while dining. That’s way better than spending time eating and spending time waiting in line to see characters. All joking aside, these are magical experiences, and I can’t recommend them enough.
1900 Park Fare at the Grand Floridian was my kids' favorite. You won’t be disappointed. The reason I say don’t overdo it is that we’ve found that kids' menus don't always have a lot of variety, so considerations like table service versus quick service, or if the kids will like the menu more than the adults, are probably all the same for your kids.
Be sure to use the
My Disney Experience App to search for attractions that will be right for your little ones. When you press the map icon, find the filter icon in the ribbon just above the map. This filter function will allow you to select the height, thrill factor, and interest that’s best for your little ones. This will help you to select which rides will be right for your family while planning, to maximize your time while at the parks.
Carrie, you’re doing an amazing thing for your family. You’re giving them childhood memories that will last a lifetime. I know you’re going to do a great job planning for them, and they’re going to love you for it! Pace yourself, and consider how you feel during the trip, too. Don’t overdo it, and really enjoy yourself. Take lots of pictures and stop for all those friendly
PhotoPass Photographers. You’ll cherish those photos and the memories you make forever! That’s the magic of Walt Disney World.
If you have more planning questions, don’t hesitate to come back to
