Welcome to planDisney, Jennifer! We are glad you brought your question to us.
How exciting for your son that he will be taking a school trip to Walt Disney World Resort!
I think you are asking about a custom lightsaber created during the experience at
Savi’s Workshop – Handbuilt Lightsabers at
Disney's Hollywood Studios. The current cost to build a lightsaber is $219.99 plus tax. (All prices are subject to change without notice.) Building a lightsaber at Savi's Workshop is an incredibly popular experience and reservations are highly recommended. Reservations can be made online using the link above. Same-day reservations or walk-up reservations are limited and subject to availability. This experience is limited to one builder and one Guest, and at least one person in the party must be age 14 or older.
According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website, lightsabers may be packed in checked or carry-on luggage. The 34" blade can be removed from the hilt making it more likely to fit in a large suitcase, but unless your son will have sufficient packing materials, I don't think I would chance packing his new lightsaber in checked luggage. I have seen many passengers boarding with their lightsaber in its carrying case as their personal item, and carefully storing it in the overhead bin. You may wish to check with the airline your son will be flying to confirm. Another option would be to ship the completed lightsaber home. Your son can inquire about shipping options at Savi's Workshop.
Dok-Ondar's Den of Antiquities offers a collection of Legacy Lightsabers for purchase. The price varies depending on the specific hilt and blade selected, but will be similar in cost to a handcrafter lightsaber at Savi's Workshop. Guests do not participate in building a Legacy Lightsaber.
Build-your-own toy lightsabers are available at
Tatooine Traders, located near the exit to Star Tours. The last time I checked, the cost to build a single-blade lightsaber was $29.99. (Price subject to change without notice.) Dual-sided lightsabers are also available. The plastic blade collapses, allowing these lightsabers to easily fit in checked luggage.
I hope that helps! If you have any additional questions, please feel free to visit planDisney again anytime.
