How long would it likely take to get from HS to the Contemporary Hotel if we stay for Fantasmic? We have dinner reservations at the California Grill at 9:30 and I'm not sure we can try to leave with the rest of the crowd at 8:30 and make it there on time.

This is in the realm of do-able. I generally tell people to allot about 45 minutes to get from a park to a resort. This is usually enough to cover the actual travel time, plus a wait for the bus. However, there are circumstances, such as the end of the day, when this may take a bit longer. The situation you're describing is one them. When Fantasmic lets out, several thousand people will be exiting the park at once, perhaps causing you to wait through more than one bus loading cycle to board. I would probably allow an hour and 15 minutes to get from the Studios to the Contemporary in this situation. If that were the case, you would be a bit late of the California Grill, but still within the window where they would honor your reservation.

One way that you could shave some time off your travel would be to take a taxi. There is a taxi pick-up quite near the bus loading zone at Hollywood Studios. A cab would cost you in the neighborhood of $15, but if one is available (which is likely) then you could easily shave 15-20 minutes off your travel time.

You should also be aware that there is a business casual dress code at the California Grill. That may impact what you decide to wear to Fantasmic.

    Have fun!
