Jaynee,
Hello fellow Hoosier! We are just down the road in Carmel!
I have not driven down to Orlando since I had my little girls, largely because the cost of flights at the time were so cheap that it cost less than driving. That is not so much the case now.
I have, however, had a number of Central Indiana friends who have done it, and all agreed that the later evening departure you recommend is the best. It is easier to get the whole drive done with kids asleep than awake!
A few suggestions for when you arrive. Since the estimated drive time should get you there in the afternoon of the next day, I recommend the following (based on personal experience, both driving overnight and international travel);
- Do not try to go to a park your arrival day. You will be tired, and why have your first park experience one where everyone is a bit cranky?
- Spend the afternoon exploring your resort.
- If so inclined, head straight to the pool for some well deserved relaxation.
- Plan a big opening night meal at one of the fun dinner locations in a Disney resort.
This last idea is the most important of all. A fun family dinner to chat about your daily plans that lie ahead really punctuates that you are on vacation. Write me back with where you are staying and a bit about your family and it's interests and I will be glad to make a dining recommendation for that first meal (and others, if needed!).
Have a magical vacation!
