Hi, Jo! You recently replied to a Q on "lovebugs." What are they, & when do they peak? We arrive 9/26. You say they don't bite - good! - but even no-bite swarms bother DD10. Do insect repellants effectively ward them off? Thanks

    Hi Peter,

I haven't personally come across any lovebugs yet but from reading lots of reports and looking at information at wikipedia.org/wiki/Lovebug I've found out that they are completely harmless and just annoying. I too am travelling at the end of September and I'm hoping that the main lovebug season will be over as it lasts between 4 and 5 weeks starting at the end of August. I haven't heard of any effective repellents but they are attracted to light colours so you may want to dress your daughter in darker colours, also if you are using a hire car try and choose a darker colour if possible.

It may be a good idea to prepare your daughter before you travel, let her read the information, especially the part that says they don't sting, so she won't be frightened by them if you do see any.

I'm sorry I haven't been more helpful as the bugs vary in number from year to year and even resort to resort it's hard to give good information. If you do find that your daughter is very distressed by them then you'll be pleased to know that the lovebugs disappear once the sun goes down so plan lots of night time park touring!

Have a great trip and if you see me or any of the Moms panel during your trip please say Hi,
