Inside the department store in Japan (Epcot) they sell pearls from an oyster tank. What type of pearl is placed in each of the oysters? Are these imitations or are they cultured?

    Hi, Larry!

I could spend days at Epcot when my family visits Walt Disney World, and a huge reason is the wide variety of shopping experiences. A good chunk of my time is spent browsing the Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japan pavilion of the World Showcase.

The motto of this authentic Japanese department store is omotenashi - service with sincerity. You will find literally hundreds - if not thousands - of Japanese apparel, jewelry, home goods, and decor. And, of course, you will find the Mitsukoshi Pick-a-Pearl kiosk. The pearls that you get from the oysters you select are genuine, cultured pearls - not imitation. You will also have the option to select settings for the pearls that you find - everything from a cage setting, that will be done in just a matter of minutes, from the oyster to your jewelry, to rings or earrings, that you can come back after you wander the World Showcase a bit to pick up. While most of the pearls are white, we have also gotten some beautiful champagne colored pearls and one pinkish one. I've heard of stunning black and grey finds, but those are much more rare.

The cast members at Mitsukoshi make this experience fun and exciting. It's a must do for us every trip.

Thanks so much for your question, Larry.
