I'm scheduled on a Disney cruise leaving San Juan, PR and returning to Ft. Lauderdale. Do I need a passport or will my birth certificate suffice? Thanks!

Ahoy, Tricia and welcome to planDisney! I'm thrilled you have a Disney Cruise countdown and that you'll be enjoying the magic at sea soon!

Thanks for asking this great question about required documentation for your one-way sailing from San Juan to Fort Lauderdale. Travelers must have an original valid US passport OR original state-issued birth certificate AND a physical government-issued photo ID (i.e. driver's license). There are other documents that would also work in lieu of the documents I mention here, however, and these are listed on the Disney Cruise Line website. Your sailing's requirements will be under "Caribbean or The Bahamas - One-Way Cruises."

So, in short, it is not required to have a passport in order to travel on this particular sailing from San Juan to Fort Lauderdale, if you are traveling with an original state-issued birth certificate AND a physical government-issued photo ID.

That said, Tricia, Disney does recommend that Guests carry a valid passport with them when traveling. In the unlikely event that an emergency should occur requiring a flight home from a foreign port, a passport allows for a swift journey home. But that's just for added comfort and convenience - not required.

Tricia, I sincerely can't wait for you to experience the magic at sea with Disney Cruise Line. Your voyage from San Juan to Fort Lauderdale will be filled with incredible activities, relaxation, and so much fun onboard. My family's highlights are always the dazzling Broadway-style performances in the evenings, getting the royal treatment at our rotational dining, and free room service right to our stateroom! (Breakfast treats from the comfort of our beds! Mickey Ice Cream Bars for bedtime snacks!) But whatever you decide to do (or snack on) onboard your Disney Cruise, I know it will be pure magic.

I hope this has been helpful to you, Tricia! If you have any other questions as you're planning, please come visit us again anytime.

    Your pal,
