I'm planning a trip to WDW late August for my son's 8th birthday. Could someone suggest a resort that is convenient, has nice theming, spacious, and fun for boys? I'm considering Contemporary or a cabin but open to other resorts.

Have you considered the Wilderness Lodge or the Animal Kingdom Lodge? These both have very outdoorsy boy-friendly themeing. As deluxe resorts, these both have spacious rooms and attractive pools with slides.

At the WL, you're in the great Northwest. There's even a geyser that periodically erupts on the grounds. The lobby has totem poles and a large stone fireplace. The WL also has one of the most kid-friendly non-character restaurants at WDW, the Whispering Canyon Cafe, where there are wooden pony races and lots of hilarious antics among the servers. There is also a bike and walking path that you can take to visit Fort Wilderness. Transportation to the Magic Kingdom is via a very pleasant and quick boat ride. Buses take you to the other parks.

At the AKL, you're on the African savannah. Some rooms even have views of real African animals roaming outside. In the evening, there are cast members that will lend you night-vision goggles to view the animals There is a delicious buffet here, Boma, that has kid-friendly choices as well as some really unique African dishes. You are a super-quick bus ride to the Animal Kingdom and a slightly longer bus ride to the other parks.

I'm sure you're son would be happy at either of these and HAPPY BIRTHDAY.
