I'm planning on renting a car from the car care center for the day and returning that same evening but most likely after they close. Unable to use the shuttle, how would I be able to get back to the Pop Century Resort? Are there disney buses near by?

If you haven't yet made your reservation, I think the easiest thing to do would be to switch to an alternate pickup location. There are several around Disney property, and others are closer to Disney buses which could get you back to your resort after the car care center shuttle is closed.

    A few options:

Alamo and National have rental desks at the Dolphin Resort. From there, you could walk or take a boat to Hollywood Studios, where you'd hop a bus to Pop Century. If you have a park ticket that you can use for that day, you could walk through Epcot to the front of the park, and take a bus from there. Or you could take a bus from the Dolphin to any park or Downtown Disney, and switch to a Pop Century bus from there.

Alternatively, you could take a bus from your resort to the Downtown Disney Marketplace stop, and walk across the street to the Hilton, where Avis has a rental location, or to Buena Vista Palace, where National is located. If you rent from either of these, it's easy to take a bus from Downtown Disney back to your resort.

And of course, you can call a taxi from anywhere you wish to return the car, and it's generally not very expensive. From the Car Care Center to Pop Century, maybe $10-$15.
