Hello! I’m looking to get a 3-day ticket but would like to upgrade to magic key passes after. Since I live in California, I saw we can make payments, but how will it work if I wanted to upgrade? Say the 3rd day, do I use that valid day and then upgrade?

Hi Angelica! Welcome back to planDisney. It’s always exciting to hear when someone is considering making the jump to a Magic Key, and I’d be happy to walk through how that transition works.

You’re right to think carefully about timing, because that’s the key to making the most of your ticket value. When you upgrade your 3-day California Resident Park Hopper ticket to a Magic Key, any remaining value from that ticket is applied toward the cost of your new pass. If you decide to take advantage of the monthly payment option available to California residents, those payments will begin as soon as the upgrade is completed (they won’t be backdated to your first visit).

One important thing to keep in mind is that your ticket must still have at least one unused admission day in order to be eligible for an upgrade. Once all three days have been used, the option to upgrade is no longer available. So if you’re planning to convert your ticket, you’ll want to do so before scanning into the parks on that final day.

Another detail that often surprises guests is how the expiration date is set. Your Magic Key’s validity period begins on the first day you used your original ticket, not the day you upgrade. Even if you wait until later in your visit to make the change, your pass will still be tied to that initial park entry date.

When you’re ready to upgrade, the process can usually be completed right in the Disneyland app. First, make sure your ticket is linked to your MyDisney account. From there, open the app, tap the menu icon in the lower right corner, and select “Tickets and Passes.” If your ticket is eligible, you should see an option to upgrade. Just follow the prompts to choose your Magic Key and complete the purchase. Availability can change, so if you see a pass that works for you, it can be a great time to move forward.

After upgrading, be sure to check out the Magic Key portal in the app. It’s a great place to find exclusive perks, seasonal offerings, and limited-time extras. During events like the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, Magic Key holders can enjoy special options like a discount on the popular Sip and Savor Pass with a commemorative lanyard, or a free scavenger hunt celebrating Disney California Adventure's 25th anniversary. My wife and I participated in that this weekend and it was fun to see all the hidden details referenced in the hunt.

I hope this helps you feel confident about when and how to upgrade, Angelica. You’ve got a great plan in place, and with just a little timing strategy, you’ll be able to make the most of both your ticket and your potential future Magic Key.

    Enjoy your next visit!
