I, my husband, 11yo daughter and her 14yo first time visiting friend are going to Disneyworld 4/20-25. They all have birthdays in the beginning of May. What's the best character dining experience for this occasion? Do they get special hats or buttons?

    Happy birthday to all.

The first thing to do is tell everyone you encounter that your group is celebrating birthdays. While this is not guaranteed, very often this will result in a small balloon bouquet being left in the room or a free cupcake at a meal.

A great way to communicate that you're having a birthday is to get a free "birthday button." You can request this at the guest relations offices at the theme parks. They are also available at many regular ticket sales windows as well as at some resort concierge desks. While you're wearing the button, many guests and cast members will give you a special smile or hello.

The classic character meal is Chef Mickey's. During this meal, the Fab Five will periodically sing and dance and celebrate everyone in the restaurant's special day. The atmosphere is quite festive. You could also arrange for a birthday cake to be presented at the meal by calling the "cake hotline" at 407-827-2253 at least 48 hours in advance.

However, since your birthday girls are a bit older, I might suggest a more grown-up birthday celebration. Perhaps dining at a signature dining restaurant would make your young ladies feel sophisticated. I suggest the California Grill during the fireworks show. This would blend the elegant celebration with some good old fashioned Disney magic.

And be sure to commemorate the occasion with lots of photos.

Hope you have a great trip.
