My husband is basically a meat and potatoes/American fare kind of guy. Booked Teppan Edo because menu shows filet mignon. How is it cooked and what is served with it? Thanks.

Teppan Edo is a wonderful restaurant. Lots of fun and delicious fresh food. There is indeed filet mignon on the menu; my husband had it the last time we dined there. But it's not really a "meat and potatoes" presentation.

Teppan Edo is a Japanese hibachi restaurant. The concept is similar to the national chain Benihana. You sit at semi-circular table with a cooking surface in the center. Each table seats eight people; if you have a party of 6 to 8, you'll likely have your own private chef.

The chef sets out various dishes of dipping sauces in front of each guest and then proceeds to cook the meal. He starts with lots of fresh veggies such as zucchini, mushrooms, broccoli, and bean sprouts. He'll dice them in a very theatrical way, often tossing bits of food high up to the ceiling with his knife and then catching them in his hat. Other typical tricks are making a flaming volcano out of an onion. There's lots of friendly banter with the guests.

The veggies and some noodles are cooked on the table in a stir-fryish way. Each guest is given a portion of noodles and vegetables to eat while the meat is cooking. Then, the chef will similarly dice and "stir fry" each guests meat in front of them. Choices include shrimp, chicken, beef, filet, and lobster. You are also given rice. Then, the chef bows good-by and you are left with your really yummy food. Even my no-veggies-ever daughter likes to eat here, she just eats the noodles and meat.  If your hubby is truly anti-experimentation, then you'd probably be better off at Le Cellier or the steakhouse at the Yacht Club. But if he's willing to branch out a bit, then Teppan Edo is a great choice.
