My husband and I would like to get the Basic dining plan but are staying in the same room as my parents who both have had gastric bypass. Does disney give an discounts on plans for those that have had bypass surgery. Or allow them to get kids meal plans?

Hi, Marissa!  When it comes to the dining plan, I have to tell you that it's just not worth it for people who have had gastric bypass surgery.  There isn't a discount on the plan as a result of having surgery, and they don't offer the plan at a child's price for a gastrically altered adult.

The things that they CAN do following gastric bypass surgery vary by restaurant.  If their surgeon gives them an identification card that indicates they've had surgery, have them bring it with them.  In many cases, they will be allowed to order from the children's menu, and at some locations, they will only be charged a child's price for a buffet.  My first trip to Walt Disney World after my gastric bypass was ten days after surgery, and I wasn't able to eat any solid food yet.  The Garden Grill allowed me to pay just a nominal entertainment fee to sit with my family and meet the characters, even though I couldn't eat any of the food.

I usually end up sharing meals with my husband or one of my daughters.  That way, I can get something I want without worrying about the rest going to waste, and the person who shares with me usually orders an appetizer or salad if they feel extra hungry.  I also order just a soup or an appetizer in place of a full entree.

There's just way too much food on the Disney Dining Plan than someone who's had gastric bypass surgery should be able to eat.  I'd probably skip it for this particular trip.

    Have a wonderful vacation!
