We are huge Disney fans and have been to Disney World several times as a family. We have 5 in our family and that fifth person seem to blow our budget completely out of the water. Do you have any suggestions how to hold down our cost for a family of 5?

Hi there, A!  I could have written this myself!  That fifth person - especially if they count as an adult according to Walt Disney World pricing standards - can really throw a budget through a loop!

Let's start simple - you may be able to lower accommodation costs by skipping the deluxe resorts and opting for Port Orleans Riverside, where you can find a bed that will accommodate a smaller fifth person.  There are also value suites at the Art of Animation resort and Disney's All Star Music Resort which will host up to six guests comfortably.

I don't usually buy the dining plan for my family, but mostly because we share meals.  If you have big eaters, you may want to look at the dining plan.  First, it lets you know your food budget up front, so it's easier to build it in.  Second, if you go during a free dining promotion, you'll be able to save quite a bit over the cost of purchasing your meals as you go.  If you can share meals, that's also a great way to save.  We might order a couple of appetizers to share, then we'll split two or three entrees.  It can cut down on dining expenses.

Look for other discounts, such as room only discounts, and you can eliminate extras like park hopping options on your passes.  You could also bring things like granola bars, juice boxes, or other snack type foods to enjoy in your room or carry in a backpack to the parks to cut down on snack expenses.

I hope this helps a bit in keeping costs down!
