Hi, We are going on a cruise on the Disney Dream in October 2014. We are in a veranda room and I was wondering about the locks on the doors. My son is 5 and I want to be sure he won't be able to reach the lock or get out on to the veranda with out me ther

Welcome aboard Kerith! This fall will be so much fun as your family sets sail on the Disney Dream! My family is really excited to head back onto the Dream this fall as well! The verandah staterooms are so wonderful, as they offer a great spot to relax, read a book, or just enjoy the best view on the high seas!

I understand your concern about making sure the door to the verandah is locked and that your son cannot open it without you around. You can rest assured that Disney created their ships with families in mind, both for fun and for safety. There is a handle that locks the door in place. It's pretty heavy to open in general, so a five year old isn't likely to slide it open very easily on his own. But, to be absolutely sure, reach up to the very top of the door where an extra lock is attached so you can secure it there too. Your son won't be able to reach that. Just don't forget to unlock it yourself! I've found myself frustrated a few times at why I can't slide the door open, only to forget that I'd locked the top in addition to the handle! Whoops!

No matter what, it's always a good idea to be with your little guy in the stateroom so that you can ensure his safety. Have fun planning and let us know if you have any other questions before you head out to sea this fall!
