Hey Erin, Check in 3/28. Have DDP. 2A, kids 14, 12, 10, 8. We've all had flu. If we are ill during stay can some order just soup or appetizer and pay cash as to not waste DDP? Even if rest of party is ordering on plan? Would hate to waste money and food.

    Hi Laurie,

Wow, I hope you're all over your illness before your trip rolls around in two weeks. That would be a pretty nasty flu.

To answer your question, you are not required to use your Dining Plan credits for any meal. If you prefer to pay cash, you are welcome to do so. For example, if mom and sis want a full meal they can tell the server that they want to use credits for their portion of the bill. And if dad and bro want just appetizers, they can tell the server that they'll be paying out of pocket for their food. Just be sure to specificy your needs to your server at the beginning of the meal so that she knows how to write up the check.

The only situation where your plan might get a little tricky is if you were dining at a buffet-style restaurants. At buffets, there is only one price point, there's no way to pay for just appetizers or just desserts. If you're eating there, you're using up a credit or paying full price no matter what you actually eat.

On a related note, guests on the dining plan are always welcome to dine with friends or family who are not on the plan. All you have to do is tell your server who's on the plan and who is paying cash, and she'll work out the rest.

Good luck with your planning. Please let me know if you have more questions.
