hi heather, i am a fellow kentuckian and i was wondering if u had ever made the trip via car? this our 9 month old daughters first trip to disney and our first time to drive instead of fly. do u have any suggestions?

    Amanda,

We have driven to Disney many times.  When you travel with little ones, I'm not convinced flying is really much easier than driving - airports aren't fun!  I'm not sure where you are at in the state, but we're south of Louisville and it generally takes us around 13 hours.  We have always chosen to make the drive overnight so the children could sleep.  It's not fun to stay up all night, but I think it would be a lot less fun to do it with 3 awake and whiny kids for company!

If it is at all possible for you, I would definitely recommend going overnight.  My husband and I take turns driving and we usually do 3 hour shifts so one can sleep while the other drives.  This keeps us from getting overly tired and we're still fairly well rested when we arrive in the morning.

For your little one, I recommend taking a few brand-new toys to hold her interest - even the dollar store can supply those.  At that age Cheerio necklaces were very popular with my girls - I'd string them onto yarn so they could nibble them right off the necklace.  And if she will pay any attention to them yet (my girls wouldn't) I'd try a portable DVD player or a movie on a laptop computer.  A few less obvious things - take plastic grocery bags for wet clothes or dirty diapers.  Take a towel or two and keep one underneath her in the carseat - on road trips, diapers don't always work exactly the way they do at home.  Take lots of snacks - they are good for keeping everyone entertained!  And take several outfits more than you should actually need (see previous tips for reason why!)

    Have a great vacation!
