Hi Heather! On our day at AK, we want to go to a nearby resort for lunch. What resorts are closest? Can you give a few suggestions. 3 adults and 2 kids (7&9). Nothing TOO funky, food-wise. Wanted to try Maya Grill, but its not open for lunch :\ T

    Wendy,

The Animal Kingdom Lodge is obviously the closest, but the only eatery there open for lunch is the quick service Mara.  They have an excellent bakery, but I find the rest of their offerings to be mediocre and I'd look elsewhere.

The next closest resorts would be the All-Stars, but their food courts are rather 'generic' as well, with standards like burgers, pizza, salads, etc.  The food is good, but not worth a special trip in my opinion.

You are correct that the Maya Grill is closed for lunch, but have you considered Pepper Market?  It is also at Coronado Springs, and while it is technically quick service, it's definitely a step up from standard.  There you will find a hostess who seats you, and a cast member who will bring you your drinks.  You will get up to select your own food from one of five different stations.  There is a very wide variety on the menu here, with choices like curry, steak, fajitas, sandwiches, pizza, and pasta.  Regrettably the kids menu is not as varied, offering basics like chicken fingers, hot dogs, pizza and pasta.  It is also worth noting that a 10% gratuity will be added onto your check when you dine here.

If you want a table service meal, you'll have to go farther as not many are open for lunch.  Probably the closest to the Animal Kingdom is the Big River Grill & Brewing Works in the Boardwalk resort area.  My favorite table service lunches are all in the Magic Kingdom resort area - ie, not very close to where you will be.  But if you decide to venture that far, I'd consider the Whispering Canyon Cafe in the Wilderness Lodge and The Wave in the Contemporary Resort.

    Hope that helps!
