My heart sank when I just read your posts saying Space Mountain closes 4/19 for refurbishing! We arrive with my 9 year old on the 20th and its his all time favorite ride! Are there other equivalent rides we should now target?

    Hi Alice,

The final countdown has begun! Yahoo! So sorry that you will be missing Space Mountain by a mere day. It is scheduled to close on April 19th for the better part of this year for a extensive refurbishment.

The first attraction that comes to mind that you could consider is Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Hollywood STudios. This attraction is a high speed roller coaster that takes place indoors in the dark. The attraction might be a bit to intense for some children and there is a height requirement of 48". The "limo car" that you ride in twists, turns and even inverts (yes that means upside down). There is flashing neon lights and loud Aerosmith music, so if you son is concerned by any of this, you may want to skip this one for another year or so.

Another great choice would be Expedition Everest at Animal Kingdom. This mountain top thrill ride is not inside like Space Mountain but it is a little tamer than Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Guests travel up the mountain and come face to face with the elusive Yeti. There is a portion of this ride in the dark and you do go backwards. This is my six year old's favorite in all of Disney World, and a great time.

Magic Kingdom offers a turn on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. This coaster is a runaway mine car that sends you sailing tare a Western landscape. The attraction is also outside and offers a number of fast curves and turns but no big drops.

Hope your son can fill his need for speed with one of these choices. Have a magical time!
