I've heard a lot of advice recommending taking a cab instead of Disney transport for early reservations. What is the average cost of a cab ride for 5 people? Wondering if the savings in time outweighs the extra cost. Thanks.

    Jennifer,

Of course cab rates vary based on your points of origin and destination, as well as time of the trip, which can vary with traffic. But as a rule I like to budget $20 per ride. That is a good rule of thumb.

Let me give you an example.

Let's say you are going from the Art of Animation Resort to the Contemporary Resort for a breakfast or dinner at Chef Mickey's. That is about a 5-mile trip, taking 10 minutes on a good day. This is not the longest possible cab ride on property, but it is not the shortest either. It is a good "average" ride. On a typical day it would be $16, before tips. But if traffic is heavy, you could get up to just under $20.

A longer ride, like from the Animal Kingdom Lodge to the Contemporary, is still under 10 miles, so that should do for an average.

To cab, or not to cab?

What my family does is plan to use Disney transportation. But if we feel like we are going to miss a reservation, we then grab a cab. Maybe we had someone nap later than expected, and we didn't want to wake them up early. Maybe we just got a late start. Whatever the reason, we budget for 3 cab rides per week-long trip, and to date have averaged 1 to 2 per trip.

BOTTOM LINE: If you plan on using cabs, only do so for 'emergencies', as otherwise your vacation budget will explode! Let them get you to meals or events where you would otherwise be late, and use regular Disney transportation at all other times.

    Have a magical vacation!
