I am a grandparent of an 8 yr old boy. After a 4 year custody battle he will be going to live with his father after we had him his entire life. We are coming in April to give him the most memorable vacation. How can we make it magical? Special to him?

    Sandra,

What a wonderful gift for you to give your grandson.  I'm sure this will be special for him no matter what you do.  A Disney vacation is always magical, but I understand your wanting to kick it up a notch.

Does he know about this trip, or is it a surprise?  If he knows, I'd involve him in the planning as much as possible so he can tell you what he really wants to see and do.

First up is choosing a resort, based on your budget and interests.  If he likes to swim then the Beach Club has an amazing pool area.  Animal Kingdom Lodge also has incredible themeing and provides a very unique experience.  For a moderate I recommend Port Orleans - French Quarter, for it's small size and unique pool slide.  All of the value resorts have similar amenities, so select one based on personal themeing preference.

Next you should plan your dining and make reservations (the sooner the better, by calling 407-WDW-DINE).  I'd select several fun character meals such as breakfast with Lilo & Stitch in 'Ohana or dinner at Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary.

For special moments, consider a private photo session at the Grand Floridian (407-824-1700) or a fireworks cruise (407-939-2329).  Even if you don't book a private photographer, be sure to use the PhotoPass photographers to capture lots of pictures so you can preserve these memories.  If a Pirate & Princess Party is going on during your visit I'd also recommend attending that - the special events are always extra fun.

I hope you can have a wonderful trip together despite the difficult circumstances, and I will remember your family in my prayers.  Have a great vacation!
