Grandma is newly dx with diabetes and is nervous about coming to WDW. I'm making reservations for buffet meals so she can pick what's best for her to eat. Would you recommend regular table service that could accommodate special diets? Any help appreciated

Hi, Emily!  Another of the many things I love about Walt Disney World is the willingness of the restaurants to work with you if you have special dietary concerns.  When you call to make your dining reservations, notify them at that time that your grandmother is a diabetic, and they will usually arrange for a chef or someone from the kitchen to come and discuss your needs with you.  Dining reservations and special dietary requests can be made by calling (407) WDW-DINE - but make sure you give them at least 72 hours notice!

As a diabetic myself, you can rest assured Grandma won't go hungry!  There are plenty of options at each of  the restaurants to help her stay with her diet.  The best things to avoid are carbohydrates and sugars, but you'll find sugar free dessert items and you can even order things like a hamburger without the bun if you wish to.

Have her talk to her doctor before she goes on vacation.  The doctor should be able to go over a list of things that would be better for her to eat and avoid; and ask him about how the increase in the amount of exercise she is likely to get may affect her need for medication.

I hope you all have a magical vacation!
