Welcome to planDisney, Wendy,
I know what you mean. An Alaska cruise aboard the Disney Wonder is so full of opportunities for adventure, that it’s almost overwhelming to consider it all. My family’s first Disney cruise was a seven-night Alaskan Cruise from Vancouver more than a decade ago. We loved it and discovered that there is so much to do, that we decided we plan to sail to Alaska regularly. I’m more than happy to share some Port Adventure recommendations from both my own experience and those of our friends who have also sailed to Alaska on the Wonder.
Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada
The
adventure doesn’t start only once you have boarded the Wonder. There’s much to explore in the beautiful city of Vancouver and surrounding areas. I have heard from many travelers that the
Capilano Suspension Bridge was an amazing experience. My family quite enjoyed a leisurely waterside walk around False Creek culminating with one of the most delicious dinners of our vacation at a restaurant on Granville Island. We arrived a few days early so we could also join a whale-watching excursion booked on our own.
Glacier Viewing
The available
Glacier Explorer Port Adventure is a bit outside our budget. But we heard only the highest of praise for the experience from friends who participated in that once-in-a-lifetime experience. It’s a great way to get up close to the awesome wonder of Alaskan glaciers. You’ll also have the opportunity to appreciate a wide view of the glaciers from deck 9 and deck 10. Don’t forget to pack layers to stay cozy and warm!
Skagway
On our first Alaskan cruise, we loved playing with
sled dog puppies and riding the White Pass and Yukon Railroad back down to the ship. On our most recent cruise,
panning for gold with Disney characters at Liarsville was a lot of fun too. With a teenage son, I think I’d steer toward the sled dogs and trains.
Juneau
In Juneau, we loved whale watching so much, we’ve done it every time we sailed to Alaska. I especially recommend the
private experience to allow you to get even closer to those magnificent creatures.
Ketchikan
Ketchikan is the gateway to a lot of adventure. But I’m especially fond of memories we made at the
Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show. I happened to be picked to participate in the show. I may not have been a great axe thrower. But my family loved an unforgettable show! We have also really enjoyed a self-guided walking tour of this quaint southeastern Alaskan town.
You better rest up, Wendy! Your Alaskan cruise will be full of non-stop fun and excitement. You may just end up like us, longing to return as soon as possible!
Have a great cruise!
~Tony
