HELLO! Glad I found you!! I was recently diagnosed (as an adult) with Type 2 Diabetes, and besides noting this on my ADRs (we have 14 booked!!), what else should I keep in mind for this trip? This is my 1st big trip since my diagnosis and I'm concerned!

Hi, Mary!  Your very best resource in understanding what to expect is going to be your doctor or diabetes educator.  They can help you understand what you may encounter with your upcoming vacation.

Some general tips I can give you is that you want to be consistent with meal times.  Don't push yourself too long in between meals, but in the event that you have to longer than you do normally, keep a snack on you.

I have found that the extra exercise and the good old Florida sunshine can have an impact on your insulin needs.  Your medical professional will be able to talk to you about the signs you should look for to recognize a low blood sugar and give you instructions as to what you should do if it happens.

I know I have a tendency to overeat at Walt Disney World.  Make good choices with your meals, don't forget to think about carbs, not just sugars, and always ask about alternatives to sweet desserts.  Most restaurants have a sugar free (although not carb free) dessert option, and some may be able to offer a cheese course or fresh fruit in place of a dessert on the menu.

Most of all, have fun!  Everyone with this diagnosis is different, so give yourself time to learn how your body is going to do with the changes you'll be making.

    Make some awesome memories!
