This is our first trip with our 7-year-old! Coming in October. Narrowed it down to either off site at Doubletree or on site at French Quarter. Having trouble with the pros and cons as far as extra magic hours and the dining plan, onsite versus off. HELP!

    Hello fellow Kentuckian!

Our family stayed off-property only once and vowed we'd never do it again.  It just doesn't have the same magic as staying in a Disney Resort, and everything felt like more of a hassle.  Our rental house said it was 1 mile from Disney property, but what we didn't realize is just how large Disney property is.  That commute that we thought would take 5 minutes was more like 45 minutes because of traffic.  (Traffic OFF property, not on)  Because our accommodations were farther away, we never felt like we could drop back in mid-day for a nap or a swim, so our days were longer and without breaks, which in turn made everyone overtired.  And we really did miss the extra magic hours and the dining plan that we have grown to love.  In short, it made our vacation a lot less magical.  I personally would not recommend staying off-property if it is financially feasible to stay on-site, especially since this is your first trip to Disney.

October is an excellent time to be in Disney with the dining plan!  The Food & Wine Festival will be going on in Epcot, and those snacks on the dining plan can be used to sample cuisine from around the world.  This is our favorite time to use the dining plan!  We save our snack credits and use them to feast on fare from each country, sampling and sharing as we walk around the World Showcase.

There are 12 panelists here and you might possibly get a different answer from each one of us, but for my money and my vacation I'd definitely book a Disney resort.  :)
