Hi, our first trip to Disney is bittersweet. My mom always wanted to take my kids. She wanted more than anything to take her grandkids to Disney. It was her "dying wish." She passed on Mother's Day last year. How can we commemorate her?

Welcome to planDisney, Colleen. My condolences on the loss of your thoughtful and giving mother. I think you've come up with a brilliant way to celebrate her. Walt Disney World Resort visits can be a balm to the soul, so even though this one will undoubtedly be bittersweet, I think you'll make your mom proud.

The trip alone is a fantastic tribute to how much you loved and honored her. I do have some ideas for including your mother, and your kiddos will make some magical memories, too.

I wholeheartedly feel that giving is better than receiving, so my first suggestion is to distribute fun gifts in her memory. Choosing the items is up to you, but I recommend giving small-denomination Disney Gift Cards or things you find in the parks, such as a Mickey-shaped balloon or collectible pins. You could have each grandchild write a note in advance explaining that they are distributing pixie dust on behalf of their Disney-loving grandmother.

Choosing the person to give the gift to is part of the magic. My family did this once, and Cast Members were the ones who got the most emotional when we gifted them. We did, too! I wasn't prepared for how special those small gestures would be. I can just imagine a little one's face when one of your children offers them a balloon! Your mom will be smiling down on that scene.

You can also pick up complimentary celebration buttons at your Disney Resort Hotel, Guest Relations, and most merchandise shops. Cast Members will write a short message for you; maybe something like "Remembering Nana" would be appropriate. Take some photos with everyone wearing the button for a special keepsake.

If she had any favorite characters, you can check whether your family can meet them at the theme parks. Open your My Disney Experience mobile app, tap the location icon at the bottom of any screen, and swipe across the top to "Characters." You can filter by your current location, and I like to tap "Show List" in the bottom right to see a list of characters and where you can meet them. You can even let the characters know the reason for your visit; those interactions can make meet-and-greets extra special.

My mom was happiest when our family spent time together, so I'm betting yours would be elated to know you're all taking this trip in her honor. I miss my mother every day, but my memories of our Disney visits are some of my most treasured. I know your family will feel the same, because your mother will be right there with you, sparkling in the sunlight and glowing with the fireworks.

Please stop by planDisney anytime, Colleen! We're happy to help however we can.

    Magic awaits,
    Elaine
