THis is our first trip to DIsney, are backpacks allowed in the Magic Kingdom and other theme parks?

Yes, you are allowed to bring a backpack, purse, diaper bag, camera bag or other personal items with you. There is, however, a limit to the size of the bag you bring into the parks. The WDW website states:

Suitcases, coolers or backpacks, with or without wheels, larger than 24" (61 cm) long x 15" (38 cm) wide x 18" (46 cm) high are prohibited. (Coolers required for medication may be stored in a locker or at Guest Relations.)

As long as your backpack is within the size limit, you'll be fine.

Enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World.
