Ahoy there, Carole!
I had to grab your question as we are headed on a Norwegian cruise very soon, so I am delighted to help both of us with itinerary planning!
Since
your cruise is longer than seven nights, you can plan on
three themed nights. You will have a semi-formal, formal, and then pirate-themed night to prepare for! I've found
this packing list for the Alaskan and Canadian itineraries helpful so that you can plan for slightly cooler weather (average during the summer is around 60F), but let's talk specifically about your dress-up nights!
Pirate Night: It's a
deck party and a blast! Think like a scalliwag and don swashbuckling garb - eye patches, captains' coats, and lots of red and black! You will have a bit of pixie dust dropped off in your room in the form of pirate bandanas for your entire party, so no worries if you don't pack a costume, you will have pirate accessories!
Semi-Formal & Formal Nights: These are optional for dressing up, but it's a lovely opportunity for your family to take advantage of the fabulous
onboard photographers and get a picture for your holiday cards (we've done this, and they always turn out great!). The suggested dress code is a jacket for men and a dress or pantsuit for women.
Carole, I hope this helps! I can't wait for both of us to experience the stunning fjords. In the meantime, I wish you smooth sailing.
