If our family would prefer to skip one of the dining room dinner meals and eat at one of the less formal options, do we need to inform anyone prior to our seating time or we just not show up?

If you know in advance that you're not going to make a reservation, the courteous thing to do is call Disney Dining at 407-WDW-DINE to cancel. This way they can release your slot to another guest.

From a monetary standpoint, for most of the restaurants at Walt Disney World, there is no penalty if you miss a reservation. However, there are a few dining experiences that do assess a penalty fee for no-shows. These are the restaurants for which you were required to leave a credit card number to hold the reservation; notably these include Cinderella's Royal Table and the Hoop Dee Doo Revue.

If you left a credit card number to hold a specific reservation, you will be charged for missing the reservation unless you cancel in advance. The specific time window for cancellation should have been explained to you when you made your reservation, or you can call 407-WDW-DINE for clarification. Otherwise, there is no fee or dining plan credit deducted for a missed meal.
