My family and I are planning a trip to Disney World next year. My step father is slightly over-weight and has bad arthritis in his knees. We don't think he'd be able to walk through the parks for too long. Is there some sort of rentable cart we could use?

There is a tremendous amount of walking involved in any WDW vacation, you are right to be concerned if your stepfather has issues with his knees. Disney does rent wheelchairs and ECVs in the theme parks. However, as a first step, I would go to the website allearsnet.com. Click on the search button (near the top right) and search for an article called "Wheelchair/Scooter/Electric Convenience Vehicle (ECV) FAQ." This will give you some good basic information on the mobility assistance situation at Disney World.

If the Disney option does not seem right for you, there are many private companies that rent wheelchairs and ECVs in the Orlando area. Most will pick up and deliver right to your hotel. I personally do not have any experience with any particular company, so I can't make a specific recommendation. However, I will tell you that many of the non-Disney scooters I've seen in the parks are from Buena Vista Scoot Rentals (buenavistascooter.com). That's probably a good place to start your investigation. Then if you Google "Disney wheelchair rental" you'll find many more options.

Another resource you should look for is a book called PassPorter's Open Mouse for Walt Disney World. This is the definitive guide for anyone visiting WDW with any sort of physical issue, including both size and mobility concerns. The potential challenges with each attraction are described in great detail. You can get this book at Amazon.com or from major booksellers.

I hope you have a lovely trip to WDW.
