I have a family of 3; myself, my husband and our 6 year old son. We are planning on spending 5 days in Disney World. How much spending cash do we need? We are staying at Pop Century and have the free dining plan.

    Hi Julie,

Great question, although I have to say it makes me laugh a little. This very subject of "spending money" has been a hot topic amongst us Moms for years. There really is no perfect answer of what the right amount is and it truly comes down to what works in your budget.

Since you have the dining plan, the majority of your meal needs will be covered but I like to figure at least $20 extra dollars a day per person for drinks and additional snacks or add-ons. If you like to enjoy an adult cocktail or two, that will of course increase. Additional spending money would be needed if you are planning on special activities or needs like renting strollers, playing miniature golf, taking in a movie, renting a surrey bike and more. Lastly is what kills my budget everytime...shopping. If you are an impulse shopper like me, and are easily drawn in by the sight of Mickey Mouse, you will want to plan a few hundred dollars at minimum for shopping. If you are able to make select choices for a few must haves then your budget will stay intact. I have found the best way to approach this is to decide in advance what you can afford. Use an envelope for spending money for extras like golf, strollers, and bellman tips. Mark an additional envelope for extra food expenses like Mickey Mouse bars and DoleWhips (a must have by the way), and then last mark an envelope for shopping. You can either make one envelope for each day you are there or one envelope for the entire stay. Once you run out of money you know you have reached your budget limit.

Good luck! Hope it works for you, I always give in and pull out the plastic.
