My family is coming to WDW 5/31-6/7 of 2009. My kids are 9,7,and 5. It has come to my attention that the event called "Gay Days" is during this time. Any advice? What should expect? How do I explain? Should we still come? Have stay 4/get 3

Hi, Regina.  This event is a non-Disney event spearheaded by the GLBT Center.  It is basically a convention, and this well attended event takes place all over Orlando.

The schedule of events has the convention doing Animal Kingdom on the fourth of June; Disney's Hollywood Studios on the fifth; Magic Kingdom on the sixth; and finally, EPCOT on the seventh.  Most of the people there for the event will follow the schedule and go the park that is on the agenda.  The participants have in the past been encouraged to wear red when they go to the Magic Kingdom - and the sea of red during the afternoon parade is really a sight to see!!

I have been at the theme parks during this event in the past, and have had my children there as well.  The atmosphere is one of fun and excitement.  We have never been exposed to anything I found objectionable, and I have not worried at all about my children being exposed to something they shouldn't see.  The theme park activities are well attended by convention participants and their families.

You will have to decide what is best for your own family.  Even my youngest child knows that families come in all different shapes and sizes, and they know that sometimes a family means two moms or two dads.  What works for us, however, may not be what works in your family.

If it were up to me, I definitely wouldn't change my vacation because of this event.  If you think you'll be uncomfortable but still want to go to Disney World, just visit theme parks that are not the focus of the convention activities.
