We want to experience a christmas or halloween atmosphere. Which do you recommend and why. Which dates are best (obviously not actually christmas or halloween days due to crowds)

Hi, Narelle!  I think making this decision is quite personal.  I absolutely love Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party, but I am a Christmas kind of girl.  I love everything about the holiday, and I cannot wait to see the resorts and parks decked out in their Christmas finery.

Depending on how long you typically visit Walt Disney World, you may actually be able to get a taste of both.  This year, one week after Halloween, Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party is offered.  The theme parks and resorts will be heading into full Christmas mode by the first week in November, so if you typically stay longer than a week, there's a chance of doing Halloween night at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party, then seeing some of the holiday decorations and lights.

If you only want to do one or the other, I would plan to head down the week after Thanksgiving.  It's typically one of the slower weeks of the year, but you'll be able to see all the trees and holiday lights, plus things like Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and Epcot's Candlelight Processional.  It's my favorite time of the year to go.

I hope you eventually get to enjoy the best of both holidays at Walt Disney World!
