Do they ever upgrade a resort w/ no extra charge?

Upgrades at WDW are not as common at Disney World as they might be with many other hotels, mostly because the Disney hotels are so often booked to capacity. I personally have never heard of anyone being upgraded to a different resort, although I'm sure that this must happen on occasion to assuage a rare guest relations disaster.

I do, however, have a good room upgrade story. This past fall I was having coffee at Starbucks with a friend of mine. As we were chatting, a friend of hers walked in whom I had never met. She joins us and proceeds to tell us about her upcoming trip to Disney World. She was less than thrilled about the trip. She complained about how crowded it would be and how hot it would be and what a big sacrifice she was making for her kids by taking them to Disney World. (I know, don't even get me started.) Long story short, I run into the naysayer a few weeks later, after she's returned from her trip. As it turns out, when they went to check in at their resort, the Beach Club, they find that they have won a Year of a Million Dreams upgrade to the President Suite. We are talking seriously swank here. Several rooms, wood burning fireplace, incredible views, concierge on call. Of all the 20,000+ rooms at WDW this one is easily in the top 10. Of course they go on to have the most wonderful vacation ever.

So, I really would not expect to be upgraded as this is not standard WDW practice, but you never know when some pixie dust might fall on you for a magical surprise.
